Rhode Island Begins Statewide ePermitting with ViewPoint Cloud

The State of Rhode Island and ViewPoint are leading the nation in rolling out an innovative statewide ePermitting platform.

Using ViewPoint Cloud, Rhode Island is modernizing state and local permitting systems through a customer-friendly online permitting portal accessed through each community’s website.

After just six months of system configuration, Rhode Island will light up the ViewPoint Cloud platform in February. Beginning with Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire permits, the platform will grow to encompass additional permit types over time.

Phase One of the project will see a launch of the platform in the office of the State Fire Marshal and State Building Code Commissioner as well as ten municipalities: Cranston, Pawtucket, Newport, Warwick, North Kingstown, West Warwick, North Providence, Westerly, North Smithfield and Woonsocket.

The platform will reach additional communities and state agencies throughout the year.

Participating communities look forward to the reduced processing times, increased permitting revenue, and greater customer service inherent to online permitting. With ViewPoint Cloud, citizens will no longer need to fill paper forms or appear in-person at city hall.

In addition, thanks to participation by state agencies, applications that require state approval will automatically route from local offices to state officials, significantly reducing complexity and confusion.

“I am very pleased to announce this first-of-its-kind initiative to provide a higher level of service and efficiency to the people of Rhode Island,” said Mayor Donald Grebien of Pawtucket, who chairs the Municipal Advisory Council on Statewide Permitting and is a vocal supporter of ePermitting. “We are creating a more business friendly atmosphere in Rhode Island which will ensure that high-value construction projects are protected from the needless and excessive building permit process.”

Rhode Island first recognized in 2014 that ePermitting was a valuable way to improve efficiency and become more business-friendly.

“Municipalities are confronted with overextended staff and increased pressure to improve the customer service,” then-Governor Lincoln Chafee said in a statement. “Electronic permitting provides Rhode Island with the tools needed to automate and streamline processes.”

State officials sought to provide a consistent, user-friendly experience by crafting a standardized ePermitting platform. ViewPoint Cloud’s simplicity and flexibility made it the ideal choice for the initiative. Together with the Municipal Advisory Council and ViewPoint, state project leadership examined, streamlined, and standardized each form and every workflow. The result is a lean permit process that takes full advantage of the technologies supporting it.
